Water before feeding -
Plug empty stud holes with cotton wool soaked in hoof oil -
Put a football in the trough in cold weather so it does not ice over -
Fill extra buckets the night before if you think your pipes will freeze -
Feed something succulent every day -
Swap your stirrup leathers from side to side each time you clean your saddle -
Wash girths inside a pillowcase to prevent damage to the washer -
Get all rugs cleaned and reproofed as soon as you stop using them -
Keep the horsebox full of fuel....you never know when you may need it -
Tie baler twine on your hoof pick so you don't lose it if you drop it -
Double net haylage for greedy horses -
Check the stitching on tack regulary -
Make sure you book your vaccinations in good time -
Check ballot dates when entering British Eventing -
Ensure your horse is fit enough to do the work you require -
Try to turn your horse out every day -
Put vaseline inside the soles of the feet in icy weather to prevent ice balls -
Plait up the night before a show if you are in a rush -
Apply pig oil to dry legs before turnout in winter to help prevent mudfever -
Pick out feet in the same order each time, this way your horse can help you -
Make sure competition entries are sent in good time - Only feed good quality feeds
- Listen to your horses body language - he could be trying to tell you something
- Book your farrier in advance from one visit to the next
- Remember to ring for your times....leave yourself a note if you need to...I DO!!
- Leave plenty of time when you arrive at a show for your horse to become accustomed to his surroundings so you can keep calm and enjoy the day
- Never leave plastic feed buckets in a stable overnight
- Invest in a good handcream
- Find an Instructor you like and get along with
- Hang a rug over the hosepipe in winter to prevent it from freezing
- Make sure all haylage is used before anyone opens another bale
- Poo pick the fields as often as possible
- Set yourself realistic goals
- Smile when you ride!!
- Make sure your hat has been properly fitted
- If you fall and bang your head....go to A&E
- Ride in the school with others to practice for when you are at shows
- Find a good fly repellant that works for your horse
- Before setting off XC prepare your wash down bucket so it is ready when you get back to the lorry
- Always put cooling jelly or clay on your horses legs after hard work
- Feed electrolytes to replace lost salts if your horse has been sweating
- Check your studs inbetween phases
- Keep upto date with your worming programme
- Wash boots and numnahs regularly
- Do not be afraid to ask for advice - just be careful who you ask!!
