kelsalljumpxc.jpegHawthorn Equestrian Centre is a Livery and Schooling yard offering livery to suit the individual needs of the clients.  We offer full, part, holiday, schooling and first time owners or supportive livery so please contact Jeni to discuss your requirements.  We run a friendly yard where you will be made very welcome.

  1. Water before feeding
  2. Plug empty stud holes with cotton wool soaked in hoof oil
  3. Put a football in the trough in cold weather so it does not ice over
  4. Fill extra buckets the night before if you think your pipes will freeze
  5. Feed something succulent every day
  6. Swap your stirrup leathers from side to side each time you clean your saddle
  7. Wash girths inside a pillowcase to prevent damage to the washer
  8. Get all rugs cleaned and reproofed as soon as you stop using them
  9. Keep the horsebox full of fuel....you never know when you may need it
  10. Tie baler twine on your hoof pick so you don't lose it if you drop it
  11. Double net haylage for greedy horses
  12. Check the stitching on tack regulary
  13. Make sure you book your vaccinations in good time
  14. Check ballot dates when entering British Eventing
  15. Ensure your horse is fit enough to do the work you require
  16. Try to turn your horse out every day
  17. Put vaseline inside the soles of the feet in icy weather to prevent ice balls
  18. Plait up the night before a show if you are in a rush
  19. Apply pig oil to dry legs before turnout in winter to help prevent mudfever
  20. Pick out feet in the same order each time, this way your horse can help you
  21. Make sure competition entries are sent in good time
  22. Only feed good quality feeds
  23. Listen to your horses body language - he could be trying to tell you something
  24. Book your farrier in advance from one visit to the next
  25. Remember to ring for your times....leave yourself a note if you need to...I DO!!
  26. Leave plenty of time when you arrive at a show for your horse to become accustomed to his surroundings so you can keep calm and enjoy the day
  27. Never leave plastic feed buckets in a stable overnight
  28. Invest in a good handcream
  29. Find an Instructor you like and get along with
  30. Hang a rug over the hosepipe in winter to prevent it from freezing
  31. Make sure all haylage is used before anyone opens another bale
  32. Poo pick the fields as often as possible
  33. Set yourself realistic goals
  34. Smile when you ride!!
  35. Make sure your hat has been properly fitted
  36. If you fall and bang your head....go to A&E
  37. Ride in the school with others to practice for when you are at shows
  38. Find a good fly repellant that works for your horse
  39. Before setting off XC prepare your wash down bucket so it is ready when you get back to the lorry
  40. Always put cooling jelly or clay on your horses legs after hard work
  41. Feed electrolytes to replace lost salts if your horse has been sweating
  42. Check your studs inbetween phases
  43. Keep upto date with your worming programme
  44. Wash boots and numnahs regularly
  45. Do not be afraid to ask for advice - just be careful who you ask!!
